Destination(s):
Canadian Rockies

Delaney is the Nile local expert for Calgary and the Canadian Rockies.
You can do all three mountain towns in five days, if you're lucky enough to have that long.
Day 1 - Canadian Rockies
 Day Note

Begin in Canmore, just west of Calgary. One of the most noteworthy parts of Canmore is the Nordic Centre where you can go cross-country skiing in the winter and moutain biking in the summer. Another noteworthy place in Canmore is the Crazyweed Kitchen - this restaurant comes highly recommended.

Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park
 Type: Recreation & Nature Area
The Nordic Centre was created in 1988 for the Winter Olympics and has remained a world-class facility since then. It is now a four-season recreational facility with more than 65 km of well-maintained tracks and trails for cross country skiing in the winter, and hiking and biking the summer. The center itself also features a cafe, locker rooms and rooms available to rent out. Lessons and equipment rentals are available all year as well.

Crazyweed Kitchen
 Cuisine: Italian, American
This charming shop is a combination cafeteria and gourmet foods shop. The menu includes a variety of creative soups, salads and sandwiches such as Salmon Quesadilla and the Vegetarian Cubano. Their pizzas are truly special and offer tasty and unique toppings such as buffalo mozzarella, sage pesto, parma ham, delicata squash and roasted pear. One wall has shelves filled with gourmet sauces, condiments and spices, and cheeses are available for purchase from a tiny cooler. There is little seating inside, but the patio is a fine place for an al fresco lunch.
Day 2 - Canadian Rockies
 Day Note

For day 2, drive the short distance to Banff. A good place to start is on Banff Ave. where you'll find the Visitor Information centre, where you'll be able to find out about all the seasonal activities available and hiking conditions. There's also lots to see just walking up and down Banff Ave. One of the most popular hikes in the area is Johnston Canyon - it's not too strenuous and it's beautiful.

Banff Avenue
 Type: Areas to Visit
Banff is not very big, so much of the action takes place on the lively main street, Banff Ave. Along the downtown stretch of this street you’ll find a ton of restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, souvenir shops and more. Spend your down day just walking along this street, eating and shopping, or come here after a day on the slopes for dinner and drinks at one of the bars or pubs that always become lively after dark. Don’t miss the Fudgery, a local favourite spot, where you can watch the goodies being made.

Johnston Canyon and the Ink Pots
 Type: Outdoors: Hike/Walk
This self-guided hiking trail 20 km west of Banff is one of the more famous hikes in the area for a reason. The trail is a good choice for any level of outdoorsman, from the energetic hiker to those looking for a casual walk through the woods. Johnston Canyon’s views are breathtaking, with a creek, a series of waterfalls and beautiful rock formations. If you have more energy, continue on to the end of the 5.5 km trail where you’ll find the Ink Pots, natural springs that appear to be coloured by glacial sediment.

Day 3 - Canadian Rockies
 Day Note

One more day in Banff. The tour agencies in this town really know what they're doing, and most tours are educational, so it's always a good idea to book at least one. One activity that is especially popular in the mountains is white water rafting and there are multiple rafting companies to choose from. Another point of interest for eating is the Grizzly House. Located right on Banff Ave., it really offers something different than anywhere else in town.

Grizzly House
Cuisine: Austrian, German & Swiss, Central European
This restaurant is an institution in Banff. The interior looks as if it was carved from the inside of a tree, with highly varnished wooden walls hanging with a whole herd of buffalo heads. The bizarre menu specializes in expensive fondue dinners featuring morsels of beef, ostrich, buffalo, rattlesnake, alligator, venison and assorted other meats. The wine list features over 100 selections including a special list of Canadian wines. Dinner at the Grizzly House is an event to remember.

Day 5 - Canadian Rockies
 Day Note

If you're gonna come all the way to the Canadian Rockies, you might as well go see a glacier! The area around Jasper is especially unique and not something you get the chance to see every day. Book a guided tour as you'll learn much more.
