Top 10:

Things to Do Near La Isla Shopping Center, Cancun, Mexico

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • La Isla Shopping Center is a lovely open-air mall in Cancun's hotel zone. It is filled with shops and restaurants, like a normal mall, but you'll also find a movie theater, a place where you can get a chair massage by the water, and even an aquarium.

The Interactive Aquarium is located right inside La Isla mall. There, you can view marine life, swim with dolphins, and even feed a shark. There is also a restaurant inside the aquarium and it overlooks the area where the dolphins are kept.

While at the mall, have a meal at one of the restaurants that face the lagoon or have a drink and watch the sunset over the water. If you need more of an adrenaline rush than that, you can check out the reverse bungee (like a giant slingshot) attraction, located near the Interactive Aquarium

The Tequila Herradura Sensatory Museum is just a short walk from La Isla mall. You can take a tour of the museum to learn about how tequila originated and how it is made. Then, after the tour, you step into the tasting room to sample various tequilas. It's a fun and inexpensive way to learn a little about Mexican culture.

A little further down the road (just a couple of blocks) from the tequila museum is Plaza Kukulkan mall and Luxury Avenue, a section of the mall that features high-end boutiques. Inside Plaza Kukulkan's main entrance there is a large stained glass ceiling which tells a story about the Mayan people. Even if you can't decipher the pictures enough to learn the story, it's still a beautiful site to see. There is usually an art display on the second floor of Plaza Kukulkan so you can see and do more at the mall than just shop.

El Rey is a small archaeological site right in the hotel zone. It is too far from La Isla mall to walk to it, but you can easily take a bus or taxi to the site. It is the largest collection of Mayan ruins in Cancun's hotel zone. The entire site can be seen in less than an hour, but it's very interesting...and a little hard to imagine a time when Cancun was nothing more than a small Mayan village.
