Shopping in Cancun can be done at high-end boutiques in upscale malls, at flea markets, or at stores of large retail giants. Whatever you want or need, you're likely to find it in Cancun. The favorable exchange rate makes shopping a bargain too!
There are five major malls in Cancun's hotel zone. They are Plaza La Isla, an upscale open-air mall, Plaza Caracol, Plaza Flamingo, Plaza Forum by the Sea, and Plaza Kukulkan. Plaza Kukulkan is the home of Luxury Avenue, a section of the mall filled entirely with high-end stores like Louis Vuitton and Fendi. Plaza Forum by the Sea is where Coco Bongo, one of Cancun's most popular nightclubs, is located. In addition to finding great shopping at each of these malls, you'll also find some wonderful restaurants at each venue.
Folks looking for souvenirs, or that just like to bargain for the best price, should check out Mercado Coral Negro, Market 28 (Mercado 28), or El Parque de las Palapas. Coral Negro is a flea market, in the hotel zone. Market 28 is a large maze-like flea market in downtown Cancun. It's not for the faint of heart, as the vendors are often pushy, loud, and annoying. There are good bargains to be had, however.
El Parque de las Palapas is not a shopping area. It's actually a large park with food vendors and a stage, where there are often musical or dance performances. At night, there are local artisans in the park selling their wares. You can find some unique souvenirs and gifts in the park and you can have a cheap, authentic Mexican meal too. The park is usually filled with families on Sundays.
Many visitors to Cancun like to go to the supermarket to buy toiletries or to stock up on food and beverages so they won't break the bank by eating out for every meal. Your best bets for grocery shopping are Walmart and Costco, the membership warehouse chain. Both Walmart and Costco are located in downtown Cancun.
