Labna - Cancun

  • Description:

    • Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma, the following description may no longer be accurate. Please consider this when making your travel plans. On September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo called oppressed natives to rise up by shouting out "Mexicanos, Viva México!" (Mexicans and Mexico live forever). El Grito (the Shout) began the bloody War of Independence that transformed Mexico into a country independent of Spain. At midnight on Sept 15th, Mexicans gather in their town square to shout out "Viva Mexico" with fervent national pride in memory of that fateful cry. On Cozumel, the event is in Plaza Central and is followed by loud fireworks, all-night music and dancing until dawn. The following day is a national holiday celebrating the fight for independence.
