Going to agree with Jonas. The Drug war is primarily in north of the country. There are instances of flare ups of turf wars around the country, but you are more liable of getting hit by a car than getting caught in the crossfire of a drug war in cancun. Tourism is the 2nd most important income to the country behind oil, so the Govt really has made safty in these areas a main goal. As long as you are NOT trying to buy Drugs or engaging with the small scale dealers, your visit should be one that you cherish the rest of your life.

I agree with the other comments! Here's a link to the NIleGuide blog I just wrote about safety in Merida and other places on the Yucatan Peninsula: http://www.nileguide.com/destination/blog/merida-mexico-74/2011/02/24/aren’t-you-afraid-to-visit-mexico-not-me-i-live-in-merida-the-city-of-peace/

The drugs cartels activity in the Cancun area is low. Gangs shooting each others or doing some kind of execution are a reality, but not more than once each few months. The possibility of getting caught into a crossfire is MUCH less than getting involved in a car accident or so. If in addition you don't look for buying drugs on the street, getting into trouble with small-scale vendors, you won´t notice at all that there is a drugs issue.

Absolutely safe, if you are in touristic area of Cancun (Hotel Zone and Downtown area). There are 24 hour public bus service in Hotel Zone, also safe at any time.

Simply put; There are NO drug wars in Cancun. I live here (not in the Hotel Zone) and walk about any time of the day or night as I please. There has been one incident in Cancun in the past year and that was at a location (normal) tourists would never go to.
