Keep in mind that around May, when the Cannes Film Festival generally takes place, that many hotels will be booked solid. On the days of the Festival itself, all major hotels are even overbooked. That means think ahead if you'll be attending to make sure you have a place to stay in Cannes proper rather than having to stay some distance down the coast and missing some of the hubbub and glamour.
There are also some cheaper and/or easier alternatives to staying in a hotel during the Festival. Renting a from an apartment dweller is one way to go, although it's best to be careful to make sure the place meets expectations. Apartments are also usually available to rent from landlords, but they can run pretty pricy.
Another option is to stay on the outskirts or slightly out of town and take a bus or taxi in daily, or to find a small hotel away from the main tourist areas. The ones that are lower in quality are usually the ones that are still available, but plenty of clean and comfortable choices can be found if you look carefully.
If your trip is planned for another time of year, though, you will have many more options to pick from. There are some truly mind-blowing luxury hotels in and around Cannes, like the Four Seasons Provence at Terre Blanche and the Hotel du Cap. The du Cap is one of the Riviera's most famous hotels, open for over a century and the most prime real estate at Festival time.
Less expensive hotels are available for those not living the high life, too, and there are even some along the shore. Charming boutique hotels bring the most authentic feeling of a French vacation, but with a wide range of amenities and prices it's not hard to find a way to experience Cannes regardless of budget.
