Cannes is one of the most beautiful and well-known cities on the French Riviera. Okay, maybe it's partially well-known because of a certain little annual film festival held here, or it could be the spectacular beaches, but it could also be because of the quality of restaurants that French nationals and foreigners alike flock to Cannes' shores.
It might not come as a shock that most of the restaurants in Cannes feature Mediterranean cuisine. The top gourmet French restaurants can be found along La Croisette, a boulevard along which many of the city's luxury hotels and designer shops also reside. Cheaper, more rustic French and Italian can be found along Rue Suquet, as can charming little bistros perfect for an afternoon glass of wine on the patio.
It might also not be so surprising that many Cannes restaurants serve seafood of the highest quality - it would be criminal if they didn't, as they are situated on the Mediterranean shoreline. Italian, French, and international restaurants alike choose to feature the fresh catch of the day in their dishes du jour. Try a bouillabaisse, the classic French seafood soup, for a chance to try a couple of different types of fish.
With the international crowd that comes through town year-round, there are also quite a few global restaurants that can be good for a break from the Mediterranean flavors that are so common around the Riviera. Japanese restaurants feature the fresh seafood in sushi form or get some spice in a red or green curry from a Thai restaurant.
Since the weather is enjoyable year-round, outdoor seating is available at many cafes and restaurants and is definitely prime property. Not surprisingly, though, it can be hard to get a seat anywhere during the film festival month of May. The cuisine of the French Riviera should be the star of your vacation whether you've come for the films or not.
