  • Historical parts of Cannes can be found in La Suquet, or the Old Town. Some buildings here date back centuries, and it's the perfect place to spend the day finding things to do while getting lost strolling around little streets and alleyways.

There's more history and things to be explored on the Iles de Lerins, two islands just a short ferry ride from the city through the deep blue Mediterranean waters. There is an abbey and some medieval ruins on the Ile St-Honorat, the smaller island, and a fort (where the Iron Mask was held) and some beautifully-landscaped grounds on the larger island of Ste. Marguerite. The view of the coast of Cannes can be pretty breathtaking, too.

Of course there is plenty of food to try, with so many good French and Italian restaurants in town. Try a different prix fixe menu every night for a good way to sample the different foods of Cannes and to get a chance to enjoy the long and languid meals that are so famously French. Another fun way to try French cuisine is to visit an open market, like the Marche Forville. One look at this market, and anyone will understand why French food tastes so good. Local farmers and culinary artisans come from all around to sell their wares: fresh eggs, herbs, produce, fish, cheese, and just about everything else you could think of, too. Grab a baguette, cheese, some cured meat, and a bottle of wine for the perfect picnic lunch.

Shopping for food isn't the only kind of shopping to be done in Cannes. Along the famous La Croisette, the highest-end in designer stores, restaurants, and customers can be enjoyed - or just observed. Even if shopping isn't one of your favorite things to do, or these places are a bit out of your price range, anyone can still enjoy the street and the energy. Grab a cone from an ice cream stand and a deck chair, and watch the world go by.
