  • NileGuide Expert Says:

Canyon holds some of North America's most culturally significant rock art

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

Summertime is brutally hot for this hike. Go any other season but then.

    Description:

    • The way to reach the trailhead for this spectacular backcountry hike is off Highway 24, well west of the main Canyonlands entrance. Located in a separate section of the park known as the Horseshoe Canyon Unit, you'll need to travel over 30 miles on a graded dirt road. In other words, don't do it when the ground's saturated with water from storms. Your driving time from Moab to the trailhead will be roughly 2.5 hours. But it's well worth it! Home to the Great Gallery, one of the world's best rock art panels, Horseshoe Canyon is simply a magnificent experience. From the west rim trailhead, it is a 6.5 mile roundtrip hike to the Great Gallery.
