Southern Suburbs
Home to the University of Cape Town, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and suburban Cape Tonians, the Southern Suburbs offer a glimpse into everyday Cape Town life. With a backdrop of the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, and views reaching across the Cape Flats to the Stellenbosch Winelands, these suburbs are far from drab.
The popular university area of Observatory is home to a young, hippy-ish crowd with small cafes, street markets, and small live music venues. Rondebosch, Claremont, and Newlands are quiet, family orientated neighborhoods while Bishopscourt and Constantia residents indulge in their expansive and expensive properties.
While the area may not be easily accessible for the pedestrian tourist, the Southern Suburbs is a convenient base for exploring Cape Town. The City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard via Hout Bay, and False Bay are all within a 20 minute drive and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are just a few minutes away.
