Cape Town Minstrel Carnival

Description:

  • January 2nd in Cape Town has been celebrated for more than 100 years for more than just a second New Years, but also as an independence day of sorts for South Africans of color. The day ushers in the Minstrel Carnival, a celebration filled with boisterous dancing, music and parades. The event features songs and dances that originated in slave culture. Lavishly costumed troubadours perform in a raucous burlesque-style in a spectacle that is truly over the top. Street parties occur throughout the city, while the main competitions take place at the Greenpoint Stadium. Admission prices vary by event.
