    Description:

The Cape Grace is the classiest option in the Waterfront -- the hotel of choice when the Clintons are in town. The difference between this hotel and the Mount Nelson -- the other top choice -- is primarily one of location; the Cape Grace is in a marina, situated on its own promontory and surrounded by water on all three sides, while the Nellie is surrounded by lush gardens. Being relatively new, it also doesn't exude the graciousness of the century-old Mount Nelson (and from an exclusivity point of view, cannot compete with the Ellerman). That said, the luxury (standard) rooms truly are luxurious, in both size and furnishings, with French doors opening onto mountain or harbor views; superior rooms are slightly larger, with walkout balconies. The two- and three-bedroom suites, with fully equipped kitchens, are ideal for families. In fact, the Cape Grace prides itself on its reputation as one of the most family-oriented luxury hotels in the country: Kids are welcomed with their own cards and gift hampers, and are read stories and given milk before bed; plus, the hotel rents anything from a car seat to a pram. Downstairs the lively Bascule regularly hosts some great New World DJs (it's packed with singles on the prowl on Fri), and the fine-dining one.waterfront is regularly voted one of the top hotel restaurants in the country (though personally I'd rather take a stroll to Den Anker).

    Our Local Expert Says:

Impeccable service and the finest finishings, this is the place for the traveler wanting personal and precise service. The hotel offers views overlooking the Atlantic and minutes from City Centre.

    Description:

On a spectacularly elevated site overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and premier suburb of Bantry Bay, this gorgeous Relais & Châteaux member is in a class of its own, and -- with only 11 rooms -- the most exclusive address in Cape Town. Once the stately residence of Sir John and Lady Ellerman, the house has been meticulously restored to its original early-20th-century splendor, with renovations and additions blending seamlessly. The views, which evoke comparisons with the Riviera, are a feature of almost every window (of which there are many) and balcony, and the sheer grace and style of the place make you feel like royalty. If you're staying in room no. 6 (no view) or room no. 3 (view, but no balcony), spend your days on the broad patio (where drinks and meals are served) or in the terraced garden with a large pool, from where you can see forever. For a view from your bathtub, book room no. 1. Chefs create each day's menu around fresh produce and will honor any special requests. Personally, this is my top choice in Cape Town, and if I could give it more stars, I would.

    Our Local Expert Says:

Set just a bit out of town on its own stretch of the Atlantic Seafront, this is the place for the traveler who wants to have a retreat from the city centre. Home to one of the most popular spas in Cape Town.

    Description:

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa stands at the edge of the world. On one side, a line of majestic mountains – The Twelve Apostles – reaches towards the heavens; on the other, the sun sets on breeching whales, playful dolphins, and crashing Atlantic rollers. And all around, you can walk the wilderness trails of the Table Mountain national park. And yet this luxury 5-star boutique hotel is just a few minutes from worldly, cosmopolitan Cape Town. City-centre theatres and art galleries, plus the shops and restaurants of the vibrant Victoria & Alfred Waterfront are only 15 minutes away via the hotel's free car transfer service – quicker still if you use the hotel's helipad. Nearest of all is the elegant town of Camps Bay with its beautiful golden beaches. Or, if you prefer adventure to sun-soaked relaxation, the hotel can arrange sea fishing, shark and scuba diving, or whale watching trips.

    Mount Nelson Hotel

Mount Nelson Hotel - Cape Town
    •

    Description:

The worst thing about staying here is how difficult it is to leave -- the "Nellie," as she's affectionately known, is a 10-minute stroll through the Company Gardens to the center of the city, yet the great pink ship is adrift in 3.6 hectares (9 acres) of mature gardens that offer all the tranquility of the country. Service standards are unparalleled, and rooms (particularly those in the Hof Villa, the main hotel building, and the sublime garden cottages around the adults' pool) are elegant and soothing. Having opened her doors in 1899 to accommodate the passengers of the Union and Castle lines, the undisputed grande dame of colonial hotels became a little fusty over the years, but with some clever refurbishing (by Cape-based designer Graham Viney, who has a real flair for sophisticated old-world charm) and the opening of the slinky Planet bar, the likes of Colin Farrell and Nicolas Cage now mingle with nouveau riche ladies in large hats and doddering aristocrats in cardigans. A massive breakfast buffet and light meals are served in the newly redecorated Oasis restaurant, overlooking the large pool and gardens. The elegant Cape Colony restaurant offers a more formal dining experience in a wonderful old-fashioned atmosphere. Even if you don't opt to stay here, make sure you set aside an afternoon to experience the Nellie's legendary high tea (R135/$19/£10 per person). Tip: While this is deservedly a firm favorite, also take a look at Ellerman House, the seaside alternative.
