Top 10:

Things to Do Near National Museum Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • Cardiff is a tourist friendly city – small enough to walk to around but lots to keep you entertained.

Top of most people’s list of things to do is a visit to Cardiff Castle which is located in the city center. The castle gives a great insight into Cardiff’s development as the building comprises several different castles built at various stages of the city’s history. Take in architecture from the Roman, Norman and Gothic periods. The castle is also a venue for events including jousting, a Mardi Gras, and various balls and concerts.

The National Museum and Gallery is also worth a visit, and close to the castle. The museum is home to some of Europe’s finest impressionist art and archeological artifacts that date back 250,000 years.

If music is your thing a trip to St. David’s Hall or Cardiff International Arena may be in order. St David’s Hall can fit 1,900 people and is home to the National Orchestra of Wales, the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and the Welsh Proms. Cardiff International Arena houses everything from children’s shows to pop concerts.

A ten-minute walk away from the centre will take you to Cardiff Bay – a fairly new development that is well worth checking out. There is quite an arty vibe here and you can find local artists displaying their work at Craft in the Bay. The Millennium Centre often has free performances taking place at lunch. You can’t miss the building, it’s a big bronze building which the locals have dubbed the “armadillo”. The bay is also a lovely place to have some lunch or dinner and just soak up the atmosphere. Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre is at the end of Harbor Drive and they can provide you with more information about the city.

Need a rest from all this sightseeing and fancy a bit of shopping? The Capitol Shopping Centre is a good place to start as it houses most of the high street brands. From here if you go left along Queen Street you’ll find the famous department stores. St David’s Centre, Queens Arcade and Castle Arcade are all options too.
