Delicious healthy grub perfect for busy shoppers

    Description:

Tucked into the arcade by the David Morgan department store on The Hayes, this vegetarian cafe has been running in Cardiff for 25 years and is a favourite place for lunchtime dining with veggies and non-veggies alike. It looks tiny from the front but go on in because there's plenty of seating inside, the pine farmhouse tables combining with the burgundy decor to give a homely feel. If you fancy watching the shoppers while you eat there are a few tables which spill out into the arcade. The homemade soups are particularly popular, and there's also a good range of salads, jacket potatoes and baguettes for those in a hurry as well as more substantial hot meals for those who want to sit a while.

    Our Local Expert Says:

Hearty Italian served quickly, so perfect for shoppers on a mission!

    Description:

A good place for lunch in a hurry, Bella Italia Cardiff is a modern Italian restaurant situated right in the middle of town, close to Cardiff castle. The small tables are fairly closely packed but there's enough space for comfort, and in any case, you won't be sitting about here long. The service is fast and the food is standard Italian, decent sized helpings of pasta and pizza with some good ice cream sundaes (if you have room for dessert) and a wine list. The clientèle is mainly young; regular lunchtime and early evening offers make it a popular student haunt during term time.

Set lunches offer good value and an imaginative range of light meals are served throughout the day. Typical meals include Thai chicken, pasta and salad dishes with plenty to suit both meat eaters and vegetarians. There is an extensive wine list with wine sold by the glass or bottle.

  • Caffè Nero

    Description:

A smart, little coffee house in the middle of the city centre shopping area, Caffè Nero offers hot drinks and snacks all day long and is very popular with business people in the city. Tables spill out onto the pavement in summer months for a breath of fresh air while you relax, though the street outside is quite busy so you may be better off on one of the bar stools by the window. The early opening hours make this an ideal place to stop for a quick cuppa before work or a hard day's sightseeing.
