Rodd Brudenell River Resort

Description:

  • The attractive Brudenell River Resort was built in 1991, and its open, vaguely Frank Lloyd Wright-esque design reflects its recent vintage. This is an especially popular destination for golfers -- it's set among two golf courses that have hosted international tournaments and exhibitions and have garnered rave reviews. Guests choose from three types of rooms. The hotel proper has nearly 100 well-appointed guest rooms, most with a balcony or terrace. The expensive cottages each have two bedrooms, cathedral ceilings, fireplaces, and large-screen TVs; then, there are a set of more basic cabins -- the best choice for those traveling on a budget, though these aren't as fresh and the units are clustered together oddly like pavilions in a long-gone world exposition. In addition to the two excellent golf courses (one with a Golf Academy offering lessons), the resort maintains indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a newer spa, which opens from mid-May through mid-October only. The dining room on the first level of this property overlooks one of the golf courses -- it's huge, but the high-backed chairs carve out a sense of intimacy. The kitchen serves dinners of what might be described as creative country-club cuisine, with entrees including charbroiled steak, sole in puff pastry, and pasta primavera.
