Description:

  • This is not only the location of this town's first well, but also the reason for the town name, Carlsbad. When an early settler named John Frazier drilled a well, he discovered quality water. The water was tested and the results indicated that it mirrored water from a famous European spa in Karlsbad (in the present-day Czech Republic). Frazier's water became popular and many settlers even claimed the water held healing powers. While a spa was established on this land in the 1880s, the well was capped and the spa closed during the Great Depression in the 1930s. In recent years, however, the well has been re-drilled and a new spa has opened. In addition, a statue dedicated to John Frazier resides on the site of this Carlsbad well and its magical mineral water.
