Dog-Friendly Carmel Weekend -- with Great Food & Wine

Dog-Friendly Carmel Weekend -- with Great Food & Wine

Description:

Dogfriendly.com named Carmel the most dog-friendly village in the U.S. Hotels, restaurants, shopkeepers, and even random passersby go out of their way to welcome your canine friend(s). Dog at your feet, lovers of wine and food can still indulge their palates, too. Make sure to pick up one of the Carmel Dog Calendars, which benefit the Monterey Bay SPCA. Pity the poor visitors who didn't bring their pooch along!

Day Note:

Once you've checked into the Cypress Inn and spoiled your pet a bit, it's just a few blocks to Carmel City Beach, where dogs can romp unleashed. Afterwards, dog on leash, take a stroll up and down Ocean Avenue and the neighboring streets, stopping along the way to indulge your shopping needs, and getting some lovely dog treats from the shopkeepers. Expect many an admiring word -- and hand -- from passersby and their children. Even the likes of Wilkes Bashford...read more

Day Note:

In the morning you'll learn the secrets of Carmel with Carmel Walks, accompanied by Fido at no extra charge. Lunch at very dog-friendly Forge-in-the-Forest, www.forgeintheforest.com. In the afternoon, a short trip to a nearby state park for dog-walking and creature-watching. Maximum 6-foot leash is required in most areas. In the evening, let your dog rest in your room while you have a romantic dinner at the ocean's edge with your other significant other.read more

    Description:

The park has two miles of beach front, with coastal hiking and a 50-foot climb to a beautiful view of the Pacific. The park offers diverse coastal vegetation with trails running from ocean beaches into dense redwood groves. The park also features outstanding coastal headlands at Soberanes Point. Sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters frequent the coastal waters and California gray whales pass close by during their yearly migration. Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach but not on the trails.

Day Note:

After a late morning stroll, weather permitting, settle in on Anton & Michel's romantic (unheated) patio for a farewell lunch. It, too, has the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence designation for its wine list. One last romp on Carmel City Beach, and farewell for this time. Next time, bring a group, and plan a party with Carmel Dog Parties, www.carmeldogparties.com
