Description:

  • Opened in 1990, Paraíso del Oso sits in a sheltered hollow with a backdrop of impressive stone palisades less than a kilometer (about a half-mile) from the town. Owner Doug Rhodes is an avid horseman and takes guests for rides that can last anywhere from 3 hours to more than a week. Rooms come with two double beds and ranch furniture. They are comfortable, with wood-burning stoves and plenty of hot water. Solar-generated electricity fuels such vital services as refrigeration, while lanterns provide light. This and the utter solitude of the area are charming traits that make you feel more in touch with the Sierra than you would at the big canyon hotels along the railroad tracks. There is a cash bar, a small but good library, wireless Internet, and topographical maps of the area.
