Kabal Kadosh Beth Elohim - Charleston (SC)

  • Description:

    • Twenty years after Charleston was established in 1670, a Jewish settlement in the city came into existence. Heralded as a city of religious tolerance and practice, the Jewish community grew and prospered and established the first Reform Jewish congregation in America in 1841. The existing colonnaded temple, built in 1841. is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. It replaced a 1792 Georgian style temple destroyed in the Great Fire of 1838. Free guided two-hour tours of the Sanctuary are available on Monday-Friday and on Sunday. There is also a book and gift shop and library. - Natasha Lawrence
