The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection

Description:

  • This museum, about 3 miles east of Charlottesville, houses one of the largest public collections of Australian aboriginal art in the world. It includes the gatherings of wealthy American businessman John W. Kluge, who began collecting in 1988, and of the late Professor Edward L. Ruhe of Kansas University, who began collecting while visiting Australia as a Fulbright Scholar in 1965. Kluge bought Ruhe's collection and archives and later gave it all to the University of Virginia.
