For funnishings and ethnic india interior designs:Fab India, Ilford House, No. 3, Woods Road and Decorum, AB-8, 2nd Avenue.
For books, CDs, cards and other novelties, visit Landmark at Nungambakkam or Fountainhead at Mylapore. The most popular bookshops are Higginbothams, BookPoint (Anna Salai) and The Bookshop at Spencer Plaza. The Giggles Bookshop at Taj Connemara hotel.
Forclothes and accessories try Lifestyle at TTK Road, Westside at Spencer Plaza, Saga Departmental stores.
Kanchipuram silks, a speciality of south, Vardharams at Harrington Rd Chetput has good collection. Co-optex Egmore sells Kanchipuram silks from their own cooperatives. Nallis is also famous for exclusive range of silks and sarees.
For handicrafts, go to state emporia which pffer you reasonably priced stuff and not the high end handicrafts stores. The best isCentral Cottage Industries Emporium in Temple Towers Anna Salaai .

Dont really have a specific place for bargain shopping in general. What we do have is a wholesale market in Parry's corner and a imported goods grey market Close by that called Burma Bazaar. Dont reckon you'll want to buy stuff you can get back in your own country . You do have a lot of stores for export surplus clothes and shoes across the city. Would you mention if there's anything specific you're looking for ..... could point you in the right direction maybe.... Have fun and a great tour when you visit India. Cheers

Your question is not clear as to what are the things you want to buy. Anyway, here is a general reply.
There are many malls and shopping complexes in and around central regions like Egmore, Thyagaraya Nagar, Vadapalani & Nungambakkam where you can buy arts and crafts goods, jewellery, metal works stone carvings and apparels.
Some great places to shop in Chennai include Alsa Mall, Fountain Plaza, Century Plaza, Spencer Plaza, Gold Crest Complex, Parry's Corner, Landmark Plaza, Rahat Plaza, Gee Gee Emerald Plaza, Wellington Plaza, etc., most of which are situated in the central area.
Anna Salai (Mount Road), Chetty Road, College Road, Chamiers Road, Radhakrishnan Road, Nageswaran Road, TTK Road and Pondy Bazar are some of the sites that are laden with reputed shopping stores.
Bargaining is quite a common practice in all these stores.
