Centro Ceremonial Kohunlich

  • Type: Landmarks
  • NileGuide Expert Says:

Kohonlich and Dzibanche are beautiful and tranquil archeological sites roughly 60-70 Km. west of Chetumal, every bit as remarkable as Tulum or Chichen Itzá, but without the crowds of tour groups. They are too far from Cancún for a day-trip, but you can spend the night in Chetumal and visit the Mayan Culture Museum, or in Bacalar and take in the lagoon.

  • Description:

    • This Mayan ceremonial center was at its peak from 300 to 1200 AD. It is a semi-explored area, where there are still a large number of hidden ruins under the earth. The Sun Temple is the most prominent edifice. Admire the big masks and mythological characters carved on the walls, legacy of the Mayan mythology, abundant in stories and legends.
