  • Dining in Chiang Mai is a special delight. Chose a street food stall, a local ‘no-frills’ restaurant, a khantoke dinner or a fine dining establishment and you are unlikely to be disappointed.

Don’t miss trying Thai Northern food, a blend of local and Burmese tastes. A favorite is Nam Prik Ong, which has a sweet, sour, and spicy taste, and is made from minced pork, mixed with pepper sauce, and tomatoes. Larp Koi, made from minced pork or beef, mixed with peppers and other spices, is eaten with fresh vegetables while Khow Soy, is an egg noodle dish filled with chunks of beef and chicken and lightly sprinkled with coconut cream and garnished with garlic and crispy noodles. Huan Soontaree, Aroon Rai and Gad Doi are places to try these dishes.

It is possible to sample Northern dishes at one of the 'Kantoke Dinners'. Here, you are seated on the floor and eat while watching traditional Thai and Northern dances and hill tribe culture shows. It can be fun but it gets uncomfortable after awhile. The Kantoke Palace and the Old Cultural Centre are places worth trying.

Lunch time offers a variety of choices for dining. All-you-can-eat buffets at large hotels feature Western, Chinese, and Japanese foods at a bargain 200-500 baht per person. There are also many outside restaurants featuring food of all types. This is a good time to try the noodle shops which are located almost everywhere throughout the city.

Whether you plan to dine Italian or Indian, Chiang Mai’s dinner time restaurants provide the array of dishes to satisfy your tastes. Try French at Le Coq D'Or, German at Haus München, Italian at Venezia and Indian at Patcha. There are also food garden restaurants which offer a variety of dishes with live music.
