Accommodations in Chiang Mai range from economical guest house or apartment to five star hotels or resorts. Once you decide on what type suits, decide which area is best for you. At present Chiang Mai prices are a great bargain so think of upgrading.
There are about 100 hotels in Chiang Mai with an estimated 10,000 rooms. They vary from basic to those with restaurants, souvenir shops, swimming pools, saunas, health-fitness centers, and discotheques. Expect to pay between 250-4,000 baht for a standard double room.
There are probably 150 guest houses in Chiang Mai. Many are small, have traditionally decorated interiors, and can provide a comfortable accommodation. Rates range from 100-800 baht per night. Most will provide a simple, clean room, and many also have food and drinks, vehicles for rent, and tourist information as well as a connection with jungle trek guides.
There are about 25 resorts located near Chiang Mai. Some have a beautiful garden, or are near a waterfall, in a peaceful mountainous area, or by a lazy river. Because of their emphasis on nature, most resorts are situated out of the city, on such scenic routes as the Mae Rim - Samoeng Rd. and the Fang - Tha Ton Rd. The Regent Resort in Mae Rim is expensive but outstanding.
Another option is to rent a condominium or apartment room at a rate of between 100-1500 baht per night. It is also possible to rent a room by the month at a slightly lower rate. Most include room cleaning service but other facilities will vary with cost.
Location is important because accommodation is scattered throughout the city. If mountain views are what you want, then Suthep Rd., Huay Kaew Rd., Canal Rd., and Nimmanhemin Rd are prime choices. The Chiang Mai Orchid is a top choice here while the Kantary Hills Hotel is another recommended option.
Our preferred option is by the Ping River. Look for accommodations on Wang Sing Kham Rd., Faharm Rd., Charoenrajd. Rd., and Koh Klang Faharm Rd. The Chedi Chiang Mai Hotel is modern and the River Ping Palace is atmospheric. Both are special.
For shopping and night life you need a downtown location, so find a place to stay on Thapae Rd., Chang Moi Rd., Kotchasarn Rd., or Chaiyaphum Rd. The Dusit D2 hotel or the Royal Princess would be suitable.
