NileGuide Expert tip:
Have a look for Thai Mountain Fan Palms (or Koh Doi in Thai). The green slopes of Doi Chiang Dao is the only place they are known to be found.
Description:
- Established on November 2, 2000, Chiang Dao national park covers 1,123 square kilometers and includes Doi Chiang Dao and Pha Dang mountain ranges. Doi Chiang Dao, literally means 'up with the stars' and its limestone peaks soar to a height of 2186 m (7174 ft), the third highest peak in Thailand. The village of Chiang Dao itself is quiet and picturesque, with a distinctly Northern Thailand flavour. Aside from the impressive caves, Chiang Dao National Park is full of trekking and hiking possibilities. Visitors can elephant trek through the jungle, white-water kayak or bamboo raft down the Mae Tang river. The area is home to several hill-tribe villages that are a little more off the beaten track than those closer to Chiang Mai. Day trips or overnight stays to the villages can usually be organized at your guesthouse. The area is also home to some unique flora and fauna, and is very popular favourite with bird watchers.
