Maung Mai Market

Description:

  • Just past the US Consulate by the Ping River is Chiang Mai's wholesale fruit market. Muang Mai, meaning "New City," is a great place to familiarize oneself with the local assortment of fruits. Rambutans, longans, lychees, mangosteens, rose-apples, papayas, mangos, pineapples, coconuts, guavas, and different kinds of bananas are just a taste of what the market has to offer. Large quantities are for sale at extremely low, wholesale prices, but fruit can be bought by the kilo or half if 20 kilograms (44 pounds) seems a bit too much. Muang Mai is just a short walk from the street markets near Warorot Market. - Scott Johnson
