Day Note:

Today is your first day in Chiang Mai, so spend some time wandering the city, orienting yourself and soaking in the sights. If you want a short, but fun activity, check out the Peak, Chiang Mai's highest rock-climbing wall. Experienced climbers and beginners alike are allowed to tackle the peak. If you know what you're doing, climb the Peak then stick around for a little while to watch the *ahem* less experienced attempt it.
For a relaxing night, head to The...read more

    Description:

Located in the heart of the Night Bazaar, The Peak stands at 15 meters as Southeast Asia's highest artificial rock-climbing wall. If you do not suffer from vertigo, you can take on the challenge of ascending the wall, including a five-meter overhang, to reach the top. Instructors will give help and guidance to those who have never attempted this sport before. This includes the necessary equipment, special climbing shoes, powder and ropes. You need not worry about falling off, as there are people clinging on to the other end of the rope should you slip. If you prefer, just sit back in an adjacent cafe and watch the action.

    Pub (The) - Chiang Mai

    Description:

This pub was voted one of the world's best by Newsweek in the 1980s and can still be a comfortable place to kick back for a drink and a bite. Do not expect the place to be hopping, though; mellow is the keyword here, whether you are gathered inside or lounging in the spacious garden, listening to the birds in the adjoining aviary. Food is typical European and pub fare with a few Thai dishes. There is a good selection of alcohol and some funny stories are posted in the restroom, reserved for when you are done drinking.

After passing down a long, shaded lane lined with new-growth bamboo, and following meandering walkways among the gobo buildings of this stylish little hideaway in the heart of the Old City, it'll be hard to believe that you're in Chiang Mai (though you can still hear the traffic). Rooms at the Tamarind are marvels of polished concrete burnished to an almost shining glow, complemented by straw mats and chic contemporary Thai furnishings, all making for a pleasing minimalist feel. Bathrooms are spacious, with large double doors connecting with the guest rooms, topped off with vaulted ceilings. There's an almost Mediterranean feel to the whole complex -- with all of the arched, covered terra-cotta walks joining buildings in a village-style layout. Short of the fine pool and a dandy restaurant, amenities are sparse, but the staff members are helpful and the atmosphere quite unique.

Day Note:

    Description:

Standing at a height of 2565 meters, Doi Inthanon is the tallest peak in Thailand. Now named after King Inthawichayanon, who was also known as King Inthanon - the mountain has been had several names over the centuries including Doi Luang, meaning 'big mountain', and Doi Ang Ka, meaning 'crow pond peak', as there was once a pool popular with crows near the summit. Part of the mountain range that seperates Burma from Thailand (Loi Lar Mountain Range or Daen Lao Range), Doi Inthanon features numerous 'must see' sights, including cascading waterfalls, an abundance of hiking trails, some beautiful views and a pair of impressive chedis, built in honor of the contemporary King and Queen. When you arrive at Doi Inthanon head for the park's administration centre. Here you can find all the information you need to plan your day. There is also a food court where you can fuel up before hitting the trails. You may also notice another example of the Royal Project, where hill tribes are learning to sustain themselves through agriculture rather than poppy farming. Make sure you check out the beautiful waterfalls surrounding Doi Inthanon, the most impressive of which is Mae Yai Falls. There is also a... read more
