Description:

If you are interested in the hilltribes of the region a good place to start is the Hilltribe Museum and Education Center. Located in the middle of town the museum features displays depicting how hilltribes live. Expect to see traditional hunting, fishing and agricultural equipment and gain some insight into how hilltribes are exploited by the tourist industry. The museum also highlights the 5,500 year history of opium, how it reached Asia and its impact on Hilltribe people. The center itself actually runs hill tribe tours, with the proceeds going to the villages themselves. The museum is now in a new Building (the Population and Community Development Association), which is adjacent to the Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant, where profits go to promoting sex education in Thailand. Don't worry the name of the restaurant is not reflected in the menu.
