Top 10:

Chicago Architecture

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • Chicago architecture has not only created a fantastic skyline of remarkable skyscrapers, but has been an influence for American architecture for their creativity and range of styles. The Great Chicago Fire destroyed much of the old architecture, but what does remain and what has been constructed since is truly remarkable. The Chicago Architecture Foundation is a great place to get information and embark on walking, biking, bus, and boat tours of the city's best architectural landmarks. The most well known tour, and arguably the best, is the Architecture River Cruise. If you do not have time to take a tour, check out some the best architectural landmarks, which include, Water Tower at the head of the Magnificent Mile, one of the few buildings that survived the Chicago Fire of 1871. Further down the Mag Mile is the Wrigley Building, standing as an elegant and prominent structure on the Chicago River. To escape the noisy activity on the Mag Mile, drop into the stunning St. James Cathedral, the oldest Episcopal Church in the city. On a larger scale, visit the Merchandise Mart, standing as the largest commercial building in the world. The Harold Washington Library, the largest public library in the world, is definitely worth a visit for its massive size, detail, and its' beautiful winter garden. It is also necessary to visit the Robie House and the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, works by the great American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. For more noteworthy American design, take a tour of the Glessner House Museum.
