Soupbox - Chicago

  • Description:

    • The Scene
Young professionals on the go scurry in and out of this teeny soup joint; some stay and chow at one of the half-dozen small tables, but most head home with bag in hand. The space is simple, with photographs by local artists decorating plain white walls. Attention is focused on the steaming black cauldrons of soup that beckon up front.

      The Food
Soupbox ladles out a dozen classic soups every day (six in the summer): split pea with ham, chicken noodle, beef stew, lobster bisque. Can't decide? Sample as many as you like. Friendly soup-pourers recommend mixing flavors. Try potato-leek with cheddar-broccoli--a delicious baked potato-y pairing. Among other flavors, lobster bisque is a standout, rich and velvety smooth. Big appetites go the bread bowl, a generous helping of soup with extra hunks of fresh bread on the side. In spring and summer, cool off with an Icebox-flavored Italian ice.
