Tizi Melloul - Chicago

  • Description:

    • An exotic haven in a neighborhood rife with raucous theme restaurants, Tizi Melloul creates an Arabian Nights fantasy world of rich reds, deep blues, and sparkling metallics. The food is good rather than spectacular, but the real draw here is the decor. In the vibrantly colored, circular Crescent Room, you'll be seated on low banquettes with floor pillows and encouraged to eat with your hands (although they'll bring silverware if you request it). The sultry, red-hued main dining room offers more traditional service, while the stark white lounge is a hangout for the hipster set.

For the full experience, order the five-course Crescent Room menu ($35), which can include French-influenced dishes such as mussels and bouillabaisse, along with tabbouleh and other familiar Mediterranean fare. Eclectic entrees include braised lamb shank with lentils and olives; Moroccan chicken stew with currants, almonds, and seasonal mushrooms; and crispy roast duck flavored with cardamom. For an added dose of exotica, catch a belly-dancing performance on Sunday night.
