There's a fantastic area in Wicker Park right around the Damen/Milwaukee/North Six Corners intersection with loads of everything you're looking for, everything from higher-end to super cheap, and there's a lot of old and new. Check out John Fluevog Shoes, iCream liquid nitrogen frozen to order ice cream, Big Star (honkeytonk, incredible tacos and great beer), Wormhole (unbelievable coffee, never believe they're vegan muffins, and a fully decked out Back to the Future DeLorean in the window, you can't miss it), but just look for crowded places, you can hardly go wrong.
