Description:

  • Jao (rhymes with ciao) is one of Wilderness Safaris' top camps (joining flagship Mombo, King's Pool, and Vumbura). Located in one of the finest concessions in the delta, it covers 60,000 hectares (148,200 acres); much of the land experiences huge fluctuations in water levels, with ever-changing views and game experiences. Location aside, it is -- in terms of style and luxury -- one of the most gorgeous, romantic camps in the delta, designed by renowned architect Silvio Rech (of Ngorongoro Crater Lodge fame). The Zen-like simplicity and airy elegance are soothing, and the natural materials neatly blend with the great views. The eight suites are arranged along a long, raised wooden footbridge, ensuring privacy. Built on stilts alongside a lily-speckled waterway, each suite has a large private viewing deck, a sala for afternoon siestas, a beautiful open-air shower, and spacious living areas with open-plan en-suite bathrooms. Note, however, that at Kwetsani , Jacana, and Tubu Tree Camp (all Wilderness Safaris), the same game-viewing is half the price.
