Cholula is a great place to just walk around enjoying an authentic mexican town. But the truth is that what people call Cholula are actually two municipalities considered part of the conurbation of Puebla: San Andrés Cholula and San Pedro Cholula. This is why here you'll find two main squares and two houses of government.
Cholula was a pre-Hispanic city, dating back to the second century BC. This site was such an important regional center, that by the time the spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes arrived to Mexico, Cholula was second only to Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital.
The great pyramid of Cholula is the world's largest pyramid by volume. At first glance, it seems to be a natural hill with a church on top. This is because when the Spaniards arrived, the "Cholultecas" buried the pyramid to save it from the destruction led by the conquerors. When the Spaniards learned about the ancient city, they decided to build a church where the main temple stood.
It is said that Cholula has 365 church cupolas, one for each day of the year. If you visit the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Our Lady of the Remedies) on top of the pyramid, you can try counting them, and while you're at it, enjoy the magnificent view of the city and the volcanos. But when you come down, be sure to go visit some of those churches, they are magnificent.
