Convento de San Gabriel

Convento de San Gabriel - Cholula
  • Type: Religious Sights
  • NileGuide Expert Says:

In here you'll find the famous and beautiful Royal Chapel.

  • Description:

    • Legend has it Cholula has 365 domes, one for each day of the year. In this complex you'll find at least 49.
The Convent of San Gabriel is one of the oldest temples in Mexico. It was built in 1549 on top of what used to be the indigenous temple dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl.
From the outside, the convent is very austere, but on the inside is amazing, specially once you start walking up and down the complex.
The main altar inside the temple is a beautiful example of the baroque style. The religious paintings date from the XVII and XVIII centuries.
The Royal Chapel, to the left, is one of a kind in Mexico. It has a mudejar style and it used to be an open chapel (from the atrium) used to baptize the indigenous. The baptismal font dates from the XVI century and it has a indigenous calendar cut out.
