Description:
Both a hotel and a wine restaurant, the centrally located Alte Thorschenke is one of the oldest and best-known establishments along either side of the Mosel. The romantically conceived building, with its timbers and towers, was originally built in 1332. It became a hotel in 1960, when a modern wing was added. Most rooms are reached via a cantilevered wooden staircase that has creaked for centuries (there's also an elevator in the rear). Six rooms have four-poster beds; all units contain tub/shower combinations. There's also a romantic Napoleon suite.
Wine Tasting with the Baron -- Guests of the Alte Thorschenke can visit the 500-year-old Schloss Landesberg, Ediger-Eller (www.mosel-weinproben.de), about 7km (4 1/2 miles) from Cochem. Here in the old cellars, you can taste some of the best wines produced along the banks of the Mosel. To arrange a visit if you're not staying at the hotel, call tel. 02675/277.
