Introduction
92km (57 miles) NE of Trier, 51km (32 miles) SW of Koblenz
This medieval town, located in one of the best wine regions of the Mosel Valley, is crowded against the left bank of the river by a huge vineyard-covered hill. Because of its large number of inns, Cochem is your best choice for an overnight stopover between Koblenz and Trier.
The town is a typical wine village, with tastings and festivals. But the biggest attraction is Reichsburg Cochem (tel. 02671/255). The original 1027 castle was almost completely destroyed by Louis XIV's army in 1689. It has since been restored according to the original ground plans, and its medieval ramparts and turrets create a dramatic backdrop for the town. To reach the castle, follow the steep footpath from the center of town; the 15-minute walk is well worth it for the rewarding views of the town and the Mosel below. Although you can visit the grounds anytime, the interior of the castle is open daily mid-March to November 9am to 5pm. Guided tours (in English) are conducted at regular intervals. Admission is 4.50€ ($7.20) for adults, 2.50€ ($4) for students and children, and 13€ ($21) for a family ticket.
