- Fort San Lorenzo is a 16th century Spanish fort that the pirate Henry Morgan attacked in 1617. It is located at the mouth of the Chagres river on the Caribbean ocean. It is fun to explore the fort, see the old cannons and barracks. The drive out to the fort is fun because you must cross a small swing bridge that is just a stone's throw in front of the Gatun locks gates. The drive out to the fort is beautiful and you travel through the rainforest. I recommend turning off your radio & AC, rolling down your windows and driving slow, keeping a lookout for wildlife. We see monkeys 100% of the time there. After wandering around the fort, there is a small trail to the right that leads to a protected cove and beach, ideal for taking a refreshing swim in the Caribbean ocean. Most often we have the beach to ourselves. It is a fun and lovely day. You can do it as a day trip and can travel over in the Panama canal train also.
