• Prohibition may have been spurred into action by the formation of the Anti-Saloon League in Ohio, but right now the state is leading the recent trend in small, craft liquor distillation. Ohio is home to a handful of microdistilleries, but Columbus' Middle West leads the pack in terms of quality -- its vodka came seventh in an international competition -- and ideals -- the company uses locally sourced grains, has sponsored a local music tour and intends to become the only distillery in the U.S. to run on solar power.
  
  Currently Middle West has three products: vodka, whiskey and a vanilla honey bean vodka, which uses Fair Trade Ugandan vanilla beans. Tours of the distillery are offered every Wednesday evening.
