Copenhagen may have developed a worldwide reputation for fine dining, but locals know that the city's eateries are just as satisfying at breakfast-time. Many cafes offer freshly-buttered breakfasts from 8am onwards, while the weekend lunchtime brunch has become a Copenhagen institution.
While almost all of the city's cafes offer some kind of brunch plate-at least at weekends-the quality varies considerably, as does the price. Expect to pay upwards of DKK 90 to as much as DKK 200 for anything from the tepid treats of a rather lackluster buffet table accompanied by ultra-strong coffee and orange concentrate to the organic delights of homemade rolls, freshly-squeezed fruit juice, Italian sausage and smoked salmon.
Vesterbro haunt Bang & Jensen has long been one of the city's most popular cafes in both daytime and evening. The cafe kicks off with a breakfast buffet at 8am, or for a full cooked version two hours later: Just fill out the slip at the counter.
Cafe Marius is famous throughout the city for its varieties of buttermilk pancakes served in the weekend brunch, with mouth-watering flavors like blueberry or banana and walnut. Another extremely popular weekend brunch hang-out is Bastionen & Løven: Brunch at the old windmill is now so popular that booking a table is almost always necessary.
We don't normally recommend oatmeal from a cafe menu, but the Granola oatmeal, with desiccated coconut, grated apple and sprinkled cinnamon is simply delightful-and the retro decor here sets the day's tone perfectly.
Nørrebro perennial The Laundromat Cafe offers two kinds of brunches: The 'dirty' and the 'clean' (the latter is a healthier, vegetarian option), which are considerably larger (and more expensive) on weekends. It's filling fare to start the day with, and there's always the option to get your week's washing done while you're there.
