Copenhagen's best Italian restaurants offer a range of mouth-watering primi and secondi dishes that go far beyond a pizza slice or a carbonara sauce. With settings that range from intimate and romantic to brash and lively, these authentic Italian eateries remind us that dining is both fun and social.
Our first choice is Copenhagen's only Michelin-starred Italian, Era Ora: A tribute to the country's cuisine in a superb waterfront setting in Christianshavn. Opting to dine here is not something done on impulse, as it does not come cheap and requires booking weeks in advance: The lunch menu is more affordable and offers a greater chance of getting a table. Alternatively, try Era Ora's 'other' restaurant, L'Altro, a less exclusive, but still high-standard trattoria-style restaurant on nearby Torvegade.
Famo in Frederiksberg recently nabbed a Michelin recommendation ' Bib Gourmand' for its high culinary standards at prices mere mortals can afford. While not cheap exactly, Famo's set menus attract a loyal following who return time and again.
La Rocca, the in-house restaurant of Ibsens Hotel, is known for its children's room and is an entirely family-friendly Italian; though with food this good, you might want to find a babysitter instead.
Nørrebro's Scarpetta and the downtown Tony's opened around the same time a few years back, both contemporary, lively Italian restaurants aiming for good food at reasonable prices, especially for set two and three course menus. Il Pecatto, meanwhile, is located right next to Palads cinema; though a visit here ought to be more of a gastronomic experience than simply 'catching a pizza' before the film.
