The past decade has seen enormous changes in Copenhagen's hotels, with the era of the uniformly clean, functional and expensive Danish hotel room a thing of the past. Our top hotel has not been party to this lodging revolution, however: Unless you're having your PR manager book your room you're unlikely to stay there, but grand and elegant Hotel D'Angleterre is, quite simply, a national landmark.
The many designer and boutique hotels in Copenhagen offer a choice of room décor ranging from pop art to maritime, and even newly-built hostel Copenhagen City offers a little designer chic into a stay. Not bad for a renovated department store, First Hotel Sankt Petri has fast caught up with D'Angleterre as a celebrity sleepover with far more hip status, and why bother visiting the National Gallery when you can sleep in the one-of-a-kind rooms on display at Hotel Fox?
More hotels mean more locations, too, so a stay in Copenhagen doesn't have to mean a view of the Central Station: those that prefer this handy location however can sleep easy knowing that many of these hotels have been bought by trustworthy chains and undergone extensive renovation. Luxurious and stylish, our no.3 choice, boutique hotel Nimb, is about as far from a typical station boarding house as it gets.
A great hotel isn't necessarily an expensive hotel, and low-cost lodging has made it onto our list, too. Hotel Sct. Thomas is a friendly, family-run cheapie, while high-rise Wakeup Copenhagen offers budget rooms for the modern traveler.
Money-saving tip: Copenhagen's hotels are generally cheaper on the weekends, making this a perfect city break destination. Look out for weekend deals when you book online.
