Culturally diverse Nørrebro is filled with offbeat restaurants and cafes for the adventurous as well as for those on a tight budget. Aside from the many falafel and kebab houses that line main thoroughfare Nørrebrogade, there are also numerous Persian and Indian restaurants. Harder to find, however, are the more expensive gourmet kitchens; smaller, offbeat versions of the ones downtown.
Restaurant Relæ opened in 2010 and has already been featured in newspapers around the world, run by ex-Noma chef Christian F. Puglisi and located on foodie street Jægersborggade in outer Nørrebro. Kiin Kiin is a gourmet Thai restaurant with one Michelin star, where the impeccable interior is overshadowed only by the meticulously-presented dishes.
Those looking for spicy, exciting menus who didn't manage to make reservations weeks beforehand could try Thai Pan, another great Thai restaurant ideally suited for those on a budget. The view of the nearby Peblinge Lake is blissful on a warm summer evening.
Not so long ago, the area around Elmegade and Sankt Hans Torv was lined with cafes, and while a good many of these have since closed down, the most established remain - like Laundromat and Sebastopol, both lively cafes with extensive evening and lunch menus. Gefarhlich and Bodega are other examples of places that have successfully combined the after-hours lounge concept with good, quality dining.
Going out for Italian in Nørrebro means more than just grabbing a pizza, at least if you try the lively, inexpensive Scarpetta on Rantzausgade - part of the revolutionary local chain Cofoco - or brand-new Spiseri, a homely, Italian-inspired cafe restaurant found on nearby Griffenfeldsgade.
Finally, gastro pub Nørrebro Bryghus transforms a pub lunch into a culinary adventure - and is one place where drinking beer with a meal is not going to lower the tone.
