Christianshavn Attractions in Copenhagen

Built under the orders of Christian IV, Christianshavn is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Copenhagen, as well as one of the best preserved. Along with adjacent islet Holmen, this area - with its canals, painted houses and fascinating history and architecture - offers a number of interesting museums and attractions.

One of the paradoxes of Christianshavn is that the smartest district in Copenhagen has its least exclusive settlement sitting directly in its backyard. Our number one attraction for the Christianshavn area is the 'free state' of Christiania, an intriguing pocket of autonomous living in the heart of the Danish capital. This experiment into free governance is found in former military barracks on Holmen.

The twisting spire of Vor Frelsers Kirke is one of Christianshavn's most familiar landmarks. The famous tower of the 'Church of our Savior' dates from the 1700s and is open to the public; daily in the summer and at weekends off-season.

Not far from the church is the small yet interesting naval museum Orlogsmuseet, with a collection of naval models dating back to the 17th century as well as a large exhibit about the Cold War.

Along with the city's older buildings, some of Copenhagen's most ambitious modern architectural projects can be found in this area, the most famous of these being Operaen: The lavish landmark building of the Royal Danish Opera sits on the waterfront at Holmen. Designed by Henning Larsen and opened in 2005, the building is an architectural showpiece both inside and outside.

Those interested in architecture should visit the Danish Architecture Center (DAC), located in a converted 18th-century warehouse on the harborfront close to Nordatlantens Brygge - the cultural center for Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Isles is probably most famous for its first floor restaurant Noma, but also hosts exhibitions and concerts on the North Atlantic countries.
