With its attractive canals, modern waterfront and maze of medieval streets, Copenhagen has a lot more attractions to offer than just Tivoli and The Little Mermaid. And being such a compact city, most of them can be found within walking distance of your downtown hotel.
Despite its obvious commercial overtones, Tivoli Gardens heads our list - this pocket of pleasure is particularly magical on cold December evenings and hot summer nights.
Copenhagen's Royal palaces attract many visitors, and while the current residence, Amalienborg may be the biggest draw, Christiansborg provides layers of national history, with the remains of four castles on one site.
The most attractive of Copenhagen's Royal palaces is arguably Rosenborg, a renaissance mansion set in a lavish park ( Kongens Have), with plenty more than just the crown jewels to see. The Round Tower (Rundetårn) makes the ideal accompaniment to Rosenborg for those interested in the achievements of builder king Christian 4, and this renaissance observatory still offers some of the best views over the city.
The canals are an essential part of Copenhagen and a must for any visitor - even tourist trap Nyhavn, which is less crowded at the bottom end - or on the other side. Try a canal tour, or alternatively take the Metro out to the picturesque quarter of Christianshavn.
Close to Christianshavn but in complete contrast is Christiania. The future of this autonomous community is on the verge of change: See it before it disappears forever.
Much older than Tivoli and a lot less polished is the nostalgic funfair Bakken. Situated in the Dyrehaven forest close to Klampenborg station, this attraction makes a great family daytrip.
