Copenhagen and Denmark in general can boast some of Europe's finest castles and stately homes. These fine historic palaces, with their grandiose turrets and towers, treacherous moats, baroque gardens and vast treasure rooms can grip the imaginations of all of us.
While power bases Christiansborg and Amalienborg may be the most important of Denmark's castles, Rosenborg takes the number one spot as the palace with the most to offer visitors. This baroque castle was originally built as the summer residence of Christian IV but can now be found on the edge of the downtown area. Surrounded by splendid grounds ( Kongens Have is the city's most popular park), Rosenborg is home to the nation's crown jewels: While you're gazing upon the country's riches, take a look at some of the other artefacts collected here, which date back as far as the renaissance.
Only some of Rococo Amalienborg, a 18th-century complex consisting of four individual palaces, is open to the public-this being the permanent residence of the Royal Family. You are able to wander freely around the square; changing of the guard takes place daily here at noon.
Christiansborg is shared jointly between the monarchy and Parliament. Open to the public are the Royal Reception Rooms and even the parliamentary chambers of the wonderfully-named Folketing; perhaps most fascinating, however, are the ruins of the original Absalon castle buried deep beneath the palace's later incarnations.
They're out of town, but the country's other castles make ideal day trips for young and old alike. Shakespeare buffs should not miss the chance to see the real Elsinore castle at Kronborg, a haunting building perched defensively on the seafront, while Frederiksborg Palace is famous for its intricately-designed gardens. Egeskov Slot, meanwhile, is found on Funen, but has enough attractions to occupy a whole day.
