  • For museum lovers, Copenhagen has a great deal to offer, from large museums with plenty of facilities to smaller, offbeat museums with more obscure exhibits. On rainy days, families can find plenty of interesting and informative distractions in special children's wings and interactive exhibits designed to shake the dust off history.

Visitors should note that many of Copenhagen's museums are closed on Mondays: In contrast, Wednesdays are excellent days to visit, with many places free on that day and others offering late-night opening.

The Nationalmuseet is free all days of the week and houses displays that span Denmark's early settlers, including Inuit and Viking cultures, through to the everyday life of Danes in the 1940s and '50s. There is also a great children's wing large enough to spend an entire afternoon in, though it is better suited to kindergarten age kids than older ones.

While the Glyptoteket museum is known mainly as an art museum, it does have a large collection of ancient artefacts from early civilizations like Greece and Egypt. The many busts and reliefs on display at Thorvaldsens Museum, which houses the collection of Danish sculptor Bertil Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), are similarly interesting.

The city museum is called simply the Museum of Copenhagen and can found on Vesterbrogade a short walk from the downtown area, and is an interesting, approachable museum that places the focus on the lives of the cty's ordinary residents.

Those who enjoy hearing the stories of regular folk should also check out the Arbejdermuseet or the workers' museum, located close to Nørreport Station. Other offbeat museums include the fascinating though a little creepy Medicinsk-Historisk Museum on Bredgade and the costumes, lighting and stage of Slotsholmen's Teatermuseet, museum of the Royal Court Theatre.
