  • When it comes to parks and gardens, Copenhagen ranks as one of the greenest cities in Europe – if not the world. The Danish capital's public parks offer visitors and city residents alike the chance to relax for a while and enjoy the open air, which Copenhageners do in droves; on their lunch breaks, after work and at weekends. And whether you're looking for a picnic spot, playground, ball game or just a place for a quiet read, there's a park here for everyone.

Our top park, Frederiksberg Have, has it all, from well-kept lawns, a palace in the center (though not open to the public) and a Chinese pagoda to a boating lake and excellent children's playground.

Even if you don't feel like visiting the stately Rosenborg Palace, don't miss out on a visit to the castle grounds. Kongens Have (The Kings' Gardens) is the city's most popular park, which is hardly surprising considering its incredibly central location.

Those looking for activities and sports should check out people's park Fælledparken. Located a little out of the city center, this large open area has facilities for various ball games as well as barbecues, outdoor summer bathing and a pavilion cafe.

As well as its popular ones, Copenhagen has plenty of secret parks, too. Our favorite of these hidden gems are newly-opened J.C. Jacobsens Have (next to the Carlsberg Museum) and the Royal Library Gardens on Slotsholmen.

Many of its parks, like the Botanical Gardens (no.6), H.C. Ørstedsparken (no.7), Østre Anlæg and Kastellet, are what remains of inner Copenhagen's embankments, and the old moat of the Danish capital has led to some wonderful inclines; just perfect for the little ones to run down, sledge on snowy winter days or simply to enjoy the view from the top.
