Top 10:

Off The Beaten Path Things to Do in Copenhagen

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • Finding Copenhagen's more off-the-beaten path attractions means heading off the walking street Strøget and down the side streets. That's not to say you need to take a bus ride; many of the city's hidden gems are just that, tucked away and yet close at hand.

Our top hidden gem is Carlsberg Byen in Vesterbro, a fascinating area filled with historical buildings as well as new cultural developments. The dramatic architecture of the former brewery is well worth seeing, and a large-scale renovation project includes a cafe in the complex.

Aside from its larger museums, Copenhagen has many smaller, more obscure museums—four of which have made our list of off-the-beaten path attractions. Worth a mention is the Medicinsk-Historisk Museum, found hidden in an unassuming terrace in Frederiksstaden but filled with fascinating medical curiosities. Cisternerne, Copenhagen's museum of modern glass art, is located underground in the wonderful setting of the Søndermarken park in Frederiksberg, in what was once the city's reservoir.

Those looking for a quiet space all of their own can hide out in the oasis of Slotsholmen's Royal Library Gardens or better still, the unspoilt wilderness of Naturcenter Vestamager—the ideal spot for untamed kids.
