• If we told you that the likes of Keith Richards and Tina Turner have checked in, would that be a plus or a minus -- perhaps a plus for Turner, a minus for the poor, beaten-up Richards. The hotel is still going strong, but actually it is past its heyday. Commissioned by King Frederik VIII in 1913, it once hosted its share of big-name celebrities to Copenhagen, even royalty. Today queens and kings stay elsewhere, although rock stars find it suits them just fine, especially its location opposite the Tivoli Gardens and close to the Central Railway Station.

  Still imbued with a turn-of-the-20th-century atmosphere, it has been successfully overhauled for first-class comfort, with items such as antique furnishings, without losing its ambience. As befits the age and era of this hotel, guest rooms come in various sizes and configurations, many evoking an English country house. Antiques, double-glazed windows, and views of the cityscape make this a winning choice. For a kind of Paris garret atmosphere, book one of the top-floor rooms with dormered windows, among the coziest in Copenhagen, especially if you're a romantic duo on an off-the-record weekend.
